.308 Winchester Guide: Rifles, Ammo and Typical Uses
The .308 Winchester is a versatile cartridge used for hunting, target shooting and precision work. It is chambered in bolt actions, semi-autos and AR-10 pattern rifles.
Bullet Weights
150 grain is a popular, flat shooting weight. 168 grain match bullets are common for accuracy. 180 grain suits larger game and heavier brush.
Hunting Loads
Soft point and bonded bullets expand reliably on deer, hogs and similar game. Match your bullet to the game and the distance you expect to shoot.
Target and Match Loads
Boat tail hollow point match bullets give tight groups at distance. Practice ammo in FMJ costs less for high volume sessions.
Rifle Platforms
Bolt actions are simple and accurate. Semi-autos give faster follow up shots. See our AR-15 vs AR-10 guide for the larger AR frame that uses .308.
Optics and Recoil
A 3-9x or 4-16x scope works for most uses. Recoil is moderate, and a good recoil pad or muzzle device helps newer shooters.
.308 vs 7.62×51
The two cartridges are close but not identical in pressure. Check your rifle markings before mixing ammo.
Barrel and Twist
A 1 in 10 twist is common for .308 and stabilizes a wide range of bullet weights. Longer barrels reach higher velocity, while shorter ones are easier to carry.
Magazines and Parts
For AR-10 pattern rifles, check magazine compatibility, since several patterns exist. Our magazine guide explains the differences.
Storage and Care
Keep the bore clean, and wipe down the action after rainy hunts. Store ammo in a dry place and rotate older boxes first.
