9mm Luger Ammo Buying Guide: FMJ, JHP, Range and Carry Loads

9mm Luger is the most popular handgun cartridge in the country. It is affordable, widely stocked and easy to shoot. This guide helps you pick the right load for the job.

FMJ for Practice

Full metal jacket rounds are the standard for range days and training. They cost the least per round and feed reliably in most pistols. Buy in bulk cases when you shoot often.

JHP for Carry and Home

Jacketed hollow points expand on impact and are chosen for defensive use. Pick a name brand load, test that it feeds in your pistol, and practice with it so you know where it hits.

Bullet Weight

The common weights are 115, 124 and 147 grain. Lighter bullets are faster and cheaper. Heavier bullets usually have a softer recoil impulse. Our post on 9mm range ammo, FMJ vs JHP covers the trade-offs.

+P and Subsonic

+P loads run at higher pressure for more velocity. Use them only if your pistol manual says it is rated for +P. Subsonic loads are made for suppressed use and may not cycle some pistols.

Brass, Steel and Aluminum Cases

Brass cases are reloadable and run clean. Steel and aluminum cases cost less but are not reloadable, and some ranges do not allow steel case or steel core ammo, so check your range rules.

Match Ammo

Match grade 9mm uses tighter tolerances for better groups. It is worth it for competition and accuracy testing.

How Much to Buy

Buy a case when you shoot every month and a few boxes when you are testing. Store ammo in a cool, dry spot in a sealed can. Keep different loads labeled so you never mix practice and carry rounds. Track what your pistol runs best, since every gun has favorites.

Pistol Fit

Most 9mm pistols run well with common brass cased FMJ. Compact and subcompact pistols can be pickier about bullet shape and weight. Fire at least a couple hundred rounds of any new load before you rely on it.

Reading the Box

The box lists bullet weight, bullet type, velocity and sometimes a pressure rating. Compare velocity and energy, but pay more attention to reliability and accuracy in your own pistol.
