AR Gas System Compatibility Guide
AR Gas System Compatibility Guide
AR gas-system components should be selected as part of the rifle’s complete operating configuration. Barrel specifications, gas-system length, gas block dimensions, gas tube, handguard clearance and the rest of the operating system all matter when choosing compatible parts.
Start With the Barrel
The barrel determines key gas-system requirements, including gas-port location and the dimensions required for a compatible gas block. Verify the barrel manufacturer’s specifications rather than choosing a gas tube or block based only on the rifle’s overall barrel length.
Match the Gas Tube and Gas Block
The gas tube must correspond to the gas-system configuration, and the gas block must fit the barrel’s specified journal dimensions. Handguard clearance and installation method can also affect component selection.
Think About the Complete Rifle
The gas system works alongside the bolt-carrier group, buffer system and ammunition. Suppressor use can also change operating characteristics. Establish correct component compatibility first, then evaluate performance as a complete system.
