AR Handguard Compatibility Guide
AR Handguard Compatibility Guide
An AR handguard has to work with more than the rifle’s appearance. Platform dimensions, barrel nut system, upper receiver, gas system, barrel profile and accessory needs all influence whether a handguard is appropriate for a particular project.
Identify the AR Platform First
AR-15 and large-frame AR platforms do not automatically share the same handguard dimensions or barrel-nut systems. Large-frame patterns can also vary between manufacturers, so the exact receiver set should be identified before choosing the handguard.
Check the Barrel Nut and Upper Receiver
Many free-float handguards use a proprietary barrel nut supplied by the manufacturer. Confirm that the handguard and mounting system are intended for the upper receiver and that installation requirements can be met.
Gas System and Clearance
Handguard length and internal dimensions must provide appropriate clearance for the barrel and gas-system components. If the project uses an adjustable gas block or other specialized components, account for their dimensions and service access.
Plan Accessory Space Around the Intended Use
Consider where optics, lights, sling hardware, support accessories and other equipment need to mount. Handguard length, rail/interface system and usable mounting space should support the rifle’s intended role rather than being selected only by overall length.
