Holographic Sight vs Red Dot for the AR-15: Which Should You Choose?

The short answer: choose a red dot if you want lighter weight and long battery life, and a holographic sight if you want a larger window and a reticle that stays crisp for some shooters with astigmatism. Both are fast, both work with both eyes open, and many shooters are happy with either.

How each one works

A red dot (reflex) sight uses an LED to project a dot onto a lens. A holographic sight uses a laser-illuminated hologram in the glass to form the reticle. In use, both give you a bright aiming point that stays on target as your eye moves behind the window.

Where holographic sights tend to win

  • Larger viewing window and a wide, open sight picture.
  • Reticles with a ring and dot that read quickly at close range.
  • Some shooters with astigmatism find the reticle looks cleaner.

Where red dots tend to win

  • Lighter and more compact.
  • Much longer battery life; many models run for thousands of hours.
  • A wide range of sizes, mounts and budgets.

Features to compare

Look at window size, dot or reticle style, battery type and life, mounting height, weight and whether the sight is enclosed. Our red dot sights guide walks through each feature, and our rifle optics guide covers magnified options.

Choosing Between Them

A holographic sight uses a laser and a hologram to project the reticle, and it keeps a clear reticle even when the window is dirty or you have an astigmatism. A red dot uses an LED and is lighter, cheaper and lasts far longer on a battery.

Battery Life and Weight

Many red dots run for tens of thousands of hours on one battery. Holographic sights run through batteries much faster and weigh more, but they give a larger window and a quick, wide field of view.

Night Vision and Astigmatism

If you use night vision, check that the sight has night vision compatible brightness settings. Shooters with astigmatism often see a cleaner reticle in a holographic sight.

Most builds are well served by a quality red dot. If you want the extra window and reticle options, step up to a holographic sight. Ask us and we will help you choose.
