Weapon Lights and Lasers Guide: Rail Mounts, Lumens and Switches
A light helps you identify what is in front of you, and a laser can aid aiming in low light. Pick based on your firearm and use.
Pistol Lights
Rail mounted lights attach to an accessory rail. Check the rail type for your pistol, since Picatinny and the Glock style rail differ.
Rifle and Shotgun Lights
Weaponlights for long guns mount on handguards or rails. A pressure switch lets you turn them on with a tap.
Lumens and Beam
More lumens means a brighter light, but beam shape matters too. A tight beam reaches farther. A wide flood helps up close.
Lasers
Red lasers are visible indoors. Green lasers are easier to see in bright conditions. Check that a laser mount holds zero.
Switches and Batteries
Look for reliable switches and common battery types. Test a fresh battery before use and keep spares.
Holster Compatibility
A light changes the shape of your pistol. Make sure your holster is made for the light and pistol combination.
Buying Tips
Match the light to the rail and keep weight in mind. A heavy light on a small pistol shifts balance and can slow your draw. Test it on your range day to confirm it holds up under recoil.
Training With a Light
Practice in a safe, dim space with an unloaded firearm. Learn to control the switch without touching the trigger. Always follow the four basic firearm safety rules. Check your light before each carry, and replace batteries on schedule.
