AR-15 Muzzle Device Guide: Flash Hiders, Brakes and Compensators
The device on the end of your barrel shapes recoil, noise and muzzle flash.
Flash Hiders
A flash hider reduces visible flash by controlling gas as it leaves the muzzle. It is a common factory choice and does not change blast much.
Muzzle Brakes
Brakes redirect gas to reduce recoil. They work well on larger calibers. They also push blast sideways and are loud for shooters next to you.
Compensators
Compensators aim gas upward to reduce muzzle rise. They are popular on competition rifles.
Suppressor Mounts
Some muzzle devices accept a suppressor on a quick attach mount. Check thread pitch and the mount style before buying either part.
Thread Pitch
Most 5.56 AR-15 barrels use 1/2×28. Other calibers vary, so confirm the pitch for your barrel.

Choosing for Your Use
For a general purpose carbine, a quality flash hider is a safe pick. For a competition build, a compensator may help. For a rifle you plan to suppress, pick a quick attach mount that matches your suppressor.
Care and Fit
Check that the device is tight and the threads are clean. Carbon builds up in muzzle devices, so wipe them down when you clean the rifle. Use thread locker only when the maker says so.
Use a crush washer or timing nut to set a device so the ports face the right way. A mismatched or loose device can harm accuracy. Our gunsmithing team can install it for you.
