Short answer: the best grip is the one that lets your wrist sit natural when the sights are lined up. Angle, size and texture all change that.
Angle
A more upright grip suits shorter, compact builds. A more angled grip is common on longer, shoulder-fired rifles.
Size and texture
Small hands often like slimmer grips. Texture adds control in wet or gloved hands.
Backstrap and storage
Some grips have a storage compartment for small items. Check how well it seals.
Fit
Most AR-15 grips fit standard lowers. Check the screw and safety-selector clearance.
What a pistol grip does
The grip gives you control of the rifle and sets how your trigger finger reaches the trigger. Because the AR-15 grip is a separate part held on by a single screw, it is one of the easiest and cheapest upgrades you can make.
Angle
The standard military A2 grip is fairly upright. More vertical grips can feel better with a lot of rail or when shooting from the shoulder with elbows in. More angled grips tend to feel better for people who shoot with a more extended stance. There is no single best angle, so try a few if you can.
Size and texture
Larger hands usually prefer a fuller grip with a built-in backstrap. Smaller hands often like a slimmer grip that does not push the trigger finger too far forward. Texture helps with wet or gloved hands, but very aggressive texture can wear on skin during long sessions.
Features to look for
- Storage: some grips have a hollow compartment for small items.
- Backstrap or beavertail: improves comfort and keeps the web of your hand from rubbing.
- Trigger guard fit: make sure the grip leaves room for your trigger guard style.
Installation notes
The grip is held by one screw that goes into the lower receiver. The safety selector detent and spring sit in a hole near where the grip mounts, and the grip covers it. Install the grip carefully so the detent spring does not launch. Use thread locker on the screw, and follow the instructions that come with the grip.
Check fit before you order
Most grips fit standard AR-15 lowers, and many also fit AR-10 lowers, but always check the product listing for compatibility with your lower.
