AR Buffer System Compatibility Guide
AR Buffer System Compatibility Guide
The buffer system is part of the operating system of many AR-platform rifles. Choosing compatible components requires looking at the receiver extension, buffer, spring, stock or brace configuration, caliber and the rest of the rifle as a system rather than selecting one part in isolation.
Know Which Platform You Are Building
AR-15 and large-frame AR platforms do not automatically share every buffer-system component. Even within the same general platform, receiver extensions, buffers and springs can differ by configuration. Start with the exact receiver set and component specifications.
Receiver Extension, Buffer and Spring
These components must work together. Check manufacturer specifications for the receiver extension length, the intended buffer and the correct spring. Avoid assuming that a part fits simply because it is marketed for an AR-style rifle.
Consider the Complete Operating System
Barrel configuration, gas system, bolt-carrier group, ammunition and suppressor use can all affect how a rifle operates. Compatibility should be established first; performance tuning comes after the correct component family is identified.
