300 Blackout AR Build Guide

A .300 Blackout AR project uses the familiar AR-15 platform but requires deliberate barrel, ammunition and operating-system planning. BMTC USA carries AR components and supports custom rifle projects from our Palmetto, Florida shop.

Confirm the Barrel and Chambering

Use a barrel specifically marked and manufactured for .300 Blackout and verify all product specifications before assembly or ammunition selection. Clear caliber identification is especially important anywhere multiple AR cartridges are present.

Plan the Gas and Buffer Configuration

Barrel configuration, gas-system specifications, bolt-carrier group, buffer system, ammunition and suppressor use can influence the complete operating setup. Follow component-manufacturer specifications for the selected configuration.

Magazine and Ammunition Identification

Use magazines identified as appropriate for the intended cartridge and keep ammunition clearly segregated and labeled. Never determine cartridge compatibility from magazine fit alone.

.300 Blackout AR-15 build: what to choose

.300 Blackout fires a .30 caliber bullet from a case based on the 5.56 case. It was designed to work in an AR-15 lower with a different barrel, and it is popular with suppressed and short-barrel builds.

Key choices

Barrel: a .300 Blackout barrel is required. Common lengths run from 9 to 16 inches.
Ammunition: lighter supersonic loads and heavier subsonic loads behave differently. Pick the one that matches your use and your gas setting.
Gas system and buffer: short barrels need the right gas tube and buffer for reliable cycling.
Magazines: standard AR-15 magazines fit. Mark them clearly so .300 Blackout and 5.56 do not get mixed.

Because the cartridges can look similar, keep .300 Blackout ammunition and magazines clearly labeled and separate from your 5.56 supplies.
