How to Choose the Right Ammunition
Start with the caliber stamped on your barrel or slide, then pick the bullet weight and type that match what you are doing. Full metal jacket loads are the usual choice for range practice because they cost less per round. Hollow point and soft point loads expand on impact and are the usual choice for defense and hunting. Match grade loads group tighter and suit precision shooting.
Popular Calibers
For pistols, 9mm Luger is the most common, followed by .45 ACP, .40 S&W, .380 ACP and 10mm. For rifles, 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington lead for AR-15 rifles, with .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor and .300 Blackout close behind. For rimfire, .22 LR is the standard for training and small game. For shotguns, shells are sold by gauge, shot size and shell length, so check your barrel marking before buying.
Box Sizes and Bulk Packs
Most handgun ammo comes in boxes of 20 or 50, rifle ammo in boxes of 20, and rimfire in boxes of 50 to 500. Bulk cases bring the cost per round down if you shoot often. Check the grain weight and the bullet type on the box, not just the caliber.
