The short answer: for most AR-15 builds, a nitride (nitrocarburized) BCG is the dependable middle ground. Choose nickel boron if you want easy cleaning, DLC if you want maximum surface hardness, and hard chrome plating where corrosion resistance matters most. The right pick depends on how you shoot, how often you clean and what your budget is.
Why the coating matters
The bolt carrier group moves fast inside a dirty, hot environment. Its coating affects wear, how easily carbon wipes off and how well the parts resist rust. A good coating will not fix a poorly made bolt, so start with a quality BCG and treat the coating as an upgrade to it.
Phosphate (parkerized)
The basic finish on many standard BCGs. It is dark, slightly porous so it holds oil, and inexpensive. It works fine for a range rifle that gets cleaned and oiled regularly.
Nitride
Nitriding hardens the surface of the steel and adds corrosion resistance. It is a popular upgrade because it is durable and does not add much cost over phosphate. Nitride BCGs usually have a dark gray or black look.
Hard chrome
Chrome plating is very resistant to corrosion and cleans easily. It is often used on parts that need to resist harsh conditions. The tradeoff is that plating thickness has to be controlled so parts still fit and function correctly.
Nickel boron (NiB)
Nickel boron is known for a slick surface that carbon wipes off of easily, which many shooters like for suppressed or high-round-count rifles. NiB parts have a lighter silver-gray look.
DLC (diamond-like carbon)
DLC is a very hard, low-friction coating. It is typically a premium option. If you shoot a lot and want the toughest surface, DLC is worth a look.
How to choose
- Range and general use: nitride.
- Easy cleaning or suppressed shooting: nickel boron.
- Humid or wet conditions: hard chrome or a corrosion-resistant coating.
- High round counts and a premium build: DLC.
