Complete AR-15 Upper Receiver Guide: What Comes With It and What to Check

A complete upper is the fast route to a new barrel and setup. It arrives assembled so you can drop it on a lower.

What Is Included

A complete upper usually has the upper receiver, barrel, gas block and tube, handguard, and a muzzle device. Some also include a bolt carrier group and charging handle. Read the listing, since options differ.

BCG and Charging Handle

If the upper does not include them, add a compatible bolt carrier group and charging handle. See our BCG guide and charging handle guide.

Caliber and Lower

Match the cartridge to the rest of your build. 5.56 uppers fit standard AR-15 lowers. Other calibers may need a different magazine or buffer.

Barrel Length and Handguard

Pick the length for how you will use it. Check the handguard fit for your accessories. See the handguard guide.

Fit and Function Check

Check the upper locks up tight to the lower with no wobble. Function test with dummy rounds before live fire.

Choosing Between Complete Uppers and a Build

A complete upper saves time and removes guesswork. Building your own gives more control over parts and cost. If you are new to AR builds, a complete upper is a good place to start. Our platform guide explains the main AR sizes.

Warranty and Support

Buy from a source that stands behind the product. Keep your receipt and note the barrel, gas system and handguard specs so you can match parts later.
